9th Edition

Now Bad

  • Performance: -1
  • Cost: Unchanged
  • Strategy: -1

Tzaangors have taken nerf after nerf in the last year without any benefit at all. They are so deep in the red now from everything else getting strong and not receiving any sort of help that just negating the point increase in 9th edition won’t be enough. Rubric Marines are in such a great place right now that you’d be crazy to load up on these guys. Now, they can still serve a role every now and then in your army but, for now we’ve got these guys on the bench.

Notes

Just to review real quick, the following things have hurt Tzaangors:

  1. Infiltrators came out, hard-countering the “Tzaangor Bomb”
  2. Did not receive Hateful Assault
  3. Received a point increase in Chapter Approved, for some reason
  4. Did not receive any benefit from Psychic Awakening
  5. Received another point increase in 9th edition

So, here’s the current state for Tzaangors:

  • They don’t get any benefit from the new Cults
  • Infiltrators, Primaris domination, and new Assault Primaris keep them in check
  • They only fill a possible small role within an army, but better options persist
  • You can no longer use the Command Re-Roll for them
  • Make sure you take the Brayhorn if you do
  • You might want to consider the (now cheaper) Tzaangor Shaman to support them
  • Tzaangor Blades still the way to go

8th Edition (Chapter Approved 2019)

Overall: 3

  • Performance: 4
  • Cost: 2
  • Strategy: 3

Notes

  • Brayhorns are mandatory
  • Tzaangor Blades are the way to go
  • It takes 23 Tzaangors to handle a 5 man squad of Intercessors
  • Can be the target of Darkmatter Crystal turn 1 to get them into combat fast
  • Make sure you take the Gaze of Fate spell to give yourself a free re-roll for when the charge roll comes up
